Biography

Faika Çelik is a historian of the early modern and modern Middle East with a particular focus on the history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. She holds a B.A. in History from Boğaziçi University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from McGill University. She currently works as an Assistant Professor and Erasmus Coordinator in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Manisa Celal Bayar University. She also serves as an associate faculty member of Women’s Studies. At Manisa Celal Bayar University, she teaches a broad range of courses on Ottoman–Turkish history and historiography, the social and political transformation of the Middle East, and women’s history. Her research interests include the history and historiography of marginalized and disadvantaged communities in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, with particular emphasis on Gypsy/Roma communities and women’s history. She has conducted extensive research in Ottoman and Turkish archives and received formal training in oral history at UC Berkeley’s Oral History Center. Her research on marginalized groups in early modern Istanbul was awarded an SSHRC Doctoral Research Award in Canada.
