Purpose: Ingestion of corrosive material by children and caustic esophageal burns is an important problem. In recent years, children ingested cleaning agents that contained hydrogen peroxide more frequently. In this experimental study, we investigated the corrosive effect of hydrogen peroxide on the esophagus mucosa. Methods: The rats were divided into 3 equal groups (n=7). The Group 1 was control group. The liquid cleaning agent including hydrogen peroxide was given to group 2 and 3 rats orally. Following injury, the esophagus from group 1 and 2 animals were excised on third day and on 21st day in Group 3 animals. Results: Histopathological examination was revealed no differences between Group 1 and 2; also between Group 1 and 3 (p>0.05).Conclusion: The cleaning agents including less than %5 hydrogen peroxide are accepted as noncorrosive and the endoscopy is not necessary in patients who ingested these agents.
