Nasreddin Hodja, as a joke figure, has been considered to be a sufi and a saint by some circles since the fifteenth century. Therefore, he has often been much revered by the sufis. His jokes have been not only narrated but also separately annotated. One of the Sufis who expounded the jokes separately was Abdullah Salahaddin-i Uşşaki, who lived in the eighteenth century. Among the works Salahi indited, his risale, which has been chosen as the subject of this study, is an important text in terms of our history of humour. As far as it has been ascertained, it is the first work in Turkish to annotate a humorous text directly belonging to Nasreddin Hodja. In the work, a mülemma couplet which is in fact mentioned in a joke and attributed to Nasreddin Hodja is annotated. The annotation has been done in line with the view of Wahdat al-Wujud (The Oneness of Being). In this study, the relationship between "poet-work-commentator-annotation-reader" is inquired in terms of the relationship between tasavvufnot known in english and humour within the frame of the Risale. Also, in the context of the joke, an analysis of sufi personality of Nasreddin Hodja, who is also considered to be a poet; the context of the mülemma couplet, that is, the joke in which the couplet is mentioned, its making and narrative context; the commentator Salahi and his world; the elements of the form and content of the annotation; and, finally, the response of the readers to this text constructed by that quadripartite relationship are presented.
