The growing importance of
the service sector in Türkiye’s total trade volume makes it necessary to
examine the foreign trade performance of this sector. In a globalizing economy,
service exports and imports play a decisive role in a country’s overall trade
balance and growth dynamics. This study aims to reveal the effects of Türkiye’s
service exports and imports on total trade growth for the period 1990-2024. The
unit root analysis of the series was performed using Fourier ADF, Fourier LM
and Fourier GLS unit root tests. The causality analysis was performed using the
Fourier Toda-Yamamoto causality test. According to the results of the Fourier
Toda-Yamamoto causality test, a unidirectional and statistically significant
causality relationship was identified from service exports and imports to total
trade. This finding shows that changes in service exports and imports directly
affect Türkiye’s total trade volume. However, no significant causal
relationship was found between total trade and service exports and imports.
These results reveal that fluctuations in Türkiye’s total trade volume are
largely driven by movements in the services sector and that this sector plays a
decisive role in the country’s foreign trade performance.
