In this study, the causal relationship between travel
services exports and imports in Türkiye and service trade was analyzed for the
period 1990-2024. In a globalizing world, the service sector is gaining
increasing importance in the economic structure of countries and playing a
decisive role in the balance of foreign trade. In particular, travel services
such as tourism constitute a significant portion of service trade revenues in
developing countries like Türkiye. The aim of this study is to reveal the
causal relationship between travel services exports and imports and the growth
of total service trade. In the analysis section, Fourier ADF and Fourier LM unit
root tests were first applied to the variables, and then the causality
relationship between the variables was determined using the Fourier
Toda-Yamamoto causality test. According to the test results, a unidirectional
and statistically significant causality relationship was found from both travel
services exports and travel services imports to total services trade. This
finding shows that changes in travel services directly affect Türkiye’s total
service trade growth. However, no significant causal relationship was found
between total service trade and travel services. These results reveal that
Türkiye’s service trade activity is largely driven by the tourism sector and
that travel services are the main determinants of total service trade.
